I opened my eyes when I heard my name being called in the distance. My bones thrummed comfortingly from their cage around me, making me reluctant to extract myself from them. I felt my soul begin to slip back into my rest state but was startled again when the earth around me vibrated.
âLainey?â
I slipped my way up through the dirt, poking my head out to see Jason standing nearby, looking down with a concerned expression. He was dressed as he had been the night before, although his clothes were camouflaged instead of black this time.
âYou must have an interesting wardrobe,â I said quietly. I could tell from how his eyes crinkled that he was smiling at the remark.
âSurprisingly, my wardrobe is actually the least interesting thing about me.â He took a seat on the raised root nearby, stretching his long legs out in front of him. I pulled the rest of my form from the grave and made my way to stand in front of Jason. I was feeling a weird surge of embarrassment, and my hands itched to rub against my thighs.
âI take it last night went either really well or really bad?â he asked cautiously, leaning forward, clasping his hands together as he rested his elbows on his knees. âI expected to see you outside bright and early, having broken some more of my stuff. So I was honestly shocked when I opened my door to see the driveway empty.â
âWhy did you come here?â
He cocked his head to the side. âTo help, obviously. I thought we were more or less on the same page that I donât want to be cursed in the afterlife or my living life, as a matter of fact. I wasnât sure where to look for you, but I figured this was one of the better places to start. So what did you find out?â he asked, pulling his notebook and pen out from his backpack, poised to take notes. He looked at me expectantly.
âDo I look dead?â
âIs this a trick question, or-?â
âI saw my body in my memories last night, as it wasâ¦after. I was bloated, gross, and obviously dead. Iâd never seen myself dead - not that I could recall before last night, anyway. Itâs dark in the hole,â I explained, gesturing to my grave.
He seemed to think it over, his eyes searching my face. I dropped my gaze down, pushing the hair back from my face. âI think you look like how you feel?â he said after a moment, his voice gentle. âYou donât have the bloating and maggots if thatâs what youâre concerned about, but Iâm sure youâre aware that you manifestâ¦umâ¦injuries?â he explained, tapping the back of his head with his ring finger gingerly. âTo me, you appear as you did when I last saw you..alive,â his voice cracked at the word. âThough youâre a bit gauzy at the edges. Itâs how I can tell you are what you are.â
âGauzy?â I asked, holding my hand up in front of my face, spreading my fingers wide.
